6 Thrift Store Items to Repurpose for National Thrift Shop Day

August 10, 2018 | By Daniel Dewitt

Nowadays there seems like there’s a day for everything (Star Wars, toast, pennies) and it’s hard to take them too seriously. But National Thrift Shop Day (August 17th) is one of the few actually one worth paying attention to. No matter what time of year, thrift shops are a great way of saving money, but August 17th is a good time to break down exactly why they are, which is what we’re here to do today.

To that end, here are 6 thrift store items that you can find for good as new at half the price at your local thrift store.

Side Table

Furniture, in general, is a good investment at any thrift store so long as it doesn’t have cushions (those get ratty fast), and something simple like a side table is especially affordable as thrift store furniture goes. They’re small enough that you don’t have to borrow a truck or van to get them home, and side tables can afford not to be the height of fashion.

Vintage Chair

If instead of innocuous furniture what you’re going for is a consciously vintage look, then a thrift store is where you should start. While you often won’t find a matching set of chairs, a mismatched collection of chairs carries a certain charm all its own. Just make sure to try out sitting in them before buying. You don’t want to get them all the way home only to realize how uncomfortable they are!

Picture Frame

While most people use their Facebook or social media platform as choice as the primary place to show off their pictures, some of us still like to have a physical copy. And that means having a nice picture frame to put it in. While not everyone you find at a thrift store will deserve to sit on your mantle, if you’re willing to do a little digging you can find a handful of decent, innocuous picture frames for as little as a few dollars.

Dishes and Flatware

You shouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg at your local Walmart or Target for something as simple as the dishes you eat off of everyday. Thrift stores nearly always have a great collection of dishes and flatware in a variety of styles that won’t cost you more than a few dollars to pick up.

Books

This will require a little more treasure hunting than the other items on this list, but most books you’ll find at a thrift store are incredibly cheap compared to ordering them online or picking them up from your local bookstore. True, you won’t find any of the hot new releases of the last year or two, but if you’re willing to do a little hunting you may be able to uncover a few of your favorites.

Clothes

Clothes make up the majority of what you’ll find in a thrift store, and for good reason. Any item that makes it to the racks you’ll be perusing will be free of holes or rips and after a good wash will serve you just fine. A thrift store is the perfect place to look to spruce up your wardrobe, especially if you’re personal style is a little more on the vintage side of things.
