Just a few hours drive north of the city of Phoenix in the midst of The Kaibab National Forest lies Flagstaff, Arizona. Far from the glitz and the lights of the metropolitan lifestyle to the south, this is a city where people come to actively seek out the majesty of nature. Located along Historic Route 66, the city is known as The City of Seven Wonders. How did it earn such an illustrious title? Location, location, location! The city is nestled at the base of the San Francisco Mountain Peaks, crowned by the Coconino Natl. Forest and is encircled by the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater Natl. Monument, Oak Creek Canyon, Wupatki Natl. Monument and Walnut Canyon. If you are looking for scenic vistas, breathtaking beauty enough open space and clean air to bring you back to nature, this is the city for you.

Named after a makeshift pine flagpole erected by a scouting party from the east coast in celebration of the American Centennial, the area was originally settled by farmers, loggers and cattlemen. It stayed predominately agrarian until the railroad opened it up to the world in 1886. Flagstaff suddenly had hundred of trains and thousands of passengers a day passing through it, making it one of the busiest stops along the transcontinental railroad line. When Route 66 came through the area in 1926 the city began a new phase of growth, this time spurred by tourism and its proximity to attractions like the Grand Canyon. Like many smaller cities along the 66 corridor, the town suffered an economic decline as interstates began diverting tourists and their dollars away from Flagstaff, and as a result, the downtown suffered an economic downturn in the 1970s through the early 1990s.

But like most things in life, the hard times eventually passed and investors began to recognize the potential of the historic downtown area, and by the early 2000s, Flagstaff was reborn as a vital, economically sound city. Still largely driven by tourism and timber, the economy also boasts a solid high tech industry, as well as shipping and manufacturing. With business comes revenue, and with the money, it brings in comes the cultural amenities, good schools and public parks that make for a great quality of life. It seems that quite a few people are catching on to everything that Flagstaff has to offer. Between 1980 and 2014, the population of the city has more than doubled to nearly 69,000 year round residents. The cost of living is low, the median income is above the state and national average and the lifestyle is second to none.

Not surprisingly, this is a city on the move. Regardless of whether you are a resident or visitor, there are plenty of things to see and do while in Flagstaff. Whether you enjoy a hike in nature, barreling down the white waters in a raft, taking photographs of native birds and wildlife, hitting the tables and trying your luck in one of the casinos or simply relaxing in the beautiful weather Flagstaff offers year round, there are plenty of options to keep you occupied. In fact, that is one of the few complaints people have about visiting the city – they run out of time well before they run out of things to see, do and experience. That must be part of the draw that keeps people coming back and even relocating to the area. Just when you think you’ve experienced it, you find that you’ve only reached the edge of beginning to discover what makes Flagstaff so special.
