I don’t know about you, but I still feel full from Thanksgiving. I’m already planning on how to work off those extra pounds in the New Year! Right now is actually a great time to start thinking about what resolutions you want to tackle for 2019. The sooner you start thinking about your goals, the sooner you can start putting in place plans that will help you achieve them.
Most of the time, for New Year’s Resolutions, we just pick things we want and hope for the best as the clock strikes 12 am. The issue with this is that it is a terrible way to tackle what are often large and significant goals. So, today, instead of telling you what your New Year’s Goals should be, I’m going to go over some tips to help you stick to them!
You might have noticed a common theme in a lot of my posts: Planning a party? Plan early! Going on a trip? Plan early! I’m sure it sounds like a broken record, but I swear to you, it is so important. Planning early also gives you time to sit and think about your goals. Now is the time to start thinking about the things you want for the next year and start thinking about what is realistic. The sooner you know what your goals are, the clearer ideas and plans you can have to reach those goals!
So, it’s early and you are planning. Time to pick the right kind of goals! For instance, one of your goals might be to buy a house but this year might not be the time for it. Instead, perhaps, “Save X amount for a down payment on a house.” Not only is this a more realistic goal, it is also doable in the year. This is a goal planning method called “chunking” – you break up your large goals into smaller, manageable chunks that can be accomplished in less time. Utilizing this method as you make your goals can also help you avoid picking goals that are hard to achieve or leave no room for failure. For instance, a lot of people go for “lose weight” and by that they mean, lose all the weight! This puts a lot of pressure to lose all the weight as fast as possible – people in this position often start a fad diet or deny themselves so much that when the inevitably fall of the wagon, it ruins the whole goal. Which leads us to our next tip.
An important part of making and keeping to resolutions is allowing for failure. Failure is something we all come across at some point and most likely will in the course of your year. You can’t let failing throw off all your goals. Planning ahead can help you avoid failure: for instance, if you decide to save $1000 a month, you should allow from the start of the year that, in December, you probably won’t be able to save $1000 because of all the Christmas presents you have to buy. By adjusting your plans to be realistic for your life, it can allow you to “fail’ without actually failing and, more importantly, it won’t cause you to feel bad about yourself. This is the same for weight loss goals, assume that during the holidays, you might not lose as much and that is okay. Dealing with failure well will keep you from rage quitting a few months into the year.
Regardless of what your goals are, a great way to help you keep to them is to use different applications that can help you keep to them! For instance, if you are planning on saving money, looking into a budgeting app like Mint. If you want something to help with weight loss or working out, check out MyFitnessPal. If you have a goal, there is an app out there with recommendations and plans for keeping it. Check them out! Just keep in mind, the app themselves aren’t enough. They’re great tools for success but you still have to put the work in!
