It's the sleepy little desert town in Arizona that became famous for its reference in the 1972 Eagles classic, "Take It Easy." Each year thousands of tourists take the famous Route 66 through the southwest corner of America in search of this mythic town and the famous corner where the "girl in the flatbed Ford" slowed down to take a look at Glenn Fry. While the origin of the city's name is debated, it is forever ingrained in the fabric of American pop culture because of one simple line in a song, but what is Winslow like these days? The area was little more than a watering station and train terminal in the late 1870s, but by the late 1800s, the town had flourished into a trading post that brought together the area Navajo population with the settlers who had come to Winslow to work the rails. The town was born of and sustained by the railroad, and by the 1930s the Santa Fe Railroad had even selected Winslow for its headquarters.

It was also around this time the city was anointed with its crowning glory - the famous Harvey House La Posada Hotel. Designed by architect Mary Colter, the hotel's design is a heartfelt homage to the native population and many the traditional Spanish-style buildings throughout the region. By 1950, America had fully embraced the car as the preferred mode of travel, and like so many railroad towns of the time, Winslow suffered as their tourism dollars dwindled. This was further compounded by the I-40 bypass in the 1970s, and the few people that used to pass through on old Rt 66 were no more. Fortunes began to change in the 1990s as a growing interest in preserving the town's history led to the restoration of the city's historic downtown as well as the now abandoned La Posada Hotel.

In 1999 the city fully embraced their fame from the Eagle's song reference and opened the Standin' on the Corner Park, featuring a red flatbed truck as well as a life-sized statue of the song's writer, Jackson Brown. Though the city has had its share of ups and downs, Winslow today is on the upswing, and the restoration of this integral part of America's storied past is nearing completion, proving that when you hang in there long enough, everything eventually comes full circle.
